The International Road Federation (IRF) presented the Brazilian State of Rio de Janeiro
with its prestigious IRF Maintenance Management Award for their RJ-122 project at the
annual Global Road Awards on January 15, 2013 in Washington, D.C.
Accepting the award on behalf of his government was Angelo Pinto Monteiro, Chief
Operating Officer for the State of Rio de Janeiro, DER-RJ and member of the
Rubberized Asphalt Foundation’s Advisory Board.
The RJ122 rehabilitation project used innovative methods in the planning,
manufacturing and delivery of rubberized asphalt mixtures. The project demonstrated
outstanding improved skid resistance, better ride quality, and reduced environmental
impacts by recycling more than 200,000 tires.
